Adobe Illustrator is arguably the best vector program. There are other vector software programs out there, such as CorelDraw and Affinity Designer, or even free vector programs such as Gravit Designer, Inkscape, Vectr, SVG-Edit, GIMP, OpenOffice Draw, Serif DrawPlus, etc. The reason Adobe Illustrator always comes out on top as the industry standard is its in depth features and tools needed for a variety of production outputs.

Many people mistake Adobe Illustrator for its raster photo editing counterpart Adobe Photoshop. While Photoshop can use some vector lines, in general, Photoshop is used for editing and manipulating raster format files such as JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc. If you open a vector file in Photoshop, it will change the format from vector to raster, so you want to be careful when doing this. While Photoshop is the king of editing (or Photoshopping) photo images, you want to leave the vector work to Adobe Illustrator.

Illustrator can be a difficult program to master. While the basic features such as the pen tool or draw tool are fairly intuitive, there are many features and tools that take a lot of experience to even do any basic editing with. We recommend finding which tools you need for your needs and finding tutorials or instructions on how to use those first. For example, if you are a screenprinter you will want to find out how to find and use Pantone colors, and how to print separations from Illustrator.
